Gender identity or expression is defined in CT hate crimes law as “a person's gender-related identity, appearance or behavior, whether or not that gender-related identity, appearance or behavior is different from that traditionally associated with the person's assigned sex at birth.”

Gender identity

One’s internal sense of maleness, femaleness, being a man, woman.

Gender expression

How a person presents one’s gender to society. This can include dress, behavior, appearance, and mannerisms.

Transgender

Most people do not experience a difference between their assigned sex at birth and their gender identity. For transgender people, however, their assigned sex at birth and their own internal sense of gender identity do not match.

Non-discrimination law

In CT, state law prohibits discrimination in housing, employment, credit, education, and public accommodations on the basis of membership in several protected classes, including: race, religious, national origin, sex, and so on.
